Getting Involved in Summer Sports

School’s out (or almost out) for most kids, and summer sports are taking over. Many families are looking for ways to keep their kids busy and active this summer. This week in the Social Fabric community, we centered our theme around summer sports. Some families are already active in sports, while others are looking for great activities.

This was a series of questions I asked members this week: Are you or a family member involved in any summer sports? What types of sports? Why do you get involved in summer sports programs?

Several members shared their insights and chatted it up in the forum. Take a look at what they had to say….

We stay as active as possible during the summer.  We practically live at the pool during the weekends, and we often ride bikes as a family through the trails.  As far as structured sports go, my husband trains at a boxing gym, my step daughter is polishing her volleyball skills so that she can make the Junior High team in the fall, and I’m currently looking for something structured for both of the little ones to do this summer.  I’m not sure if it will be swimming lessons or possibly t-ball for the little guy.  And my little Bug wants to take gymnastics.  As for me?  Well, I’m the one that does all of the running around after them so I just exercise when I can, and the running tends to keep me in shape ~ Christy from Insanity Is Not An Option.

We do what we can, and in our case, that means attending events, going places, spending lots of time in the pool. My kids are 2 and 4, so there is no competitive sport involved, but we just want to make sure they get the most out of summer ~ Lena from Way 2 Good Life.

Both of my boys love soccer.  They love going to the pool also, but they don’t take swimming lessons.  I would love to get my 8yr old into Tae-Kwan-Do but can’t afford it right now. As for me, I really like Zumba. Why I get involved is because I love being there for them, and I get to socialize with other parents from the school.  But mainly I get involved to share and take pictures of all their shining moments, plus to watch how the boys have grown and evolved from one year to the other. I want to share everything with them because I know one day they will be on their own, and all I will have is memories. So being involved is very special to me ~ Minta from Minta’s Creations.

We stay active all summer but not in organized sports.  We do have a weekly sport night with a few other families.  Last week we played kickball, volleyball and lightning (with basketballs).  We do lots of swimming in lakes and at water parks…riding bike, walks, softball ~ Tonia from The Gunny Sack.

In the past our girls have played softball which eeeked into the summer. We moved last summer and didn’t get that going for this year. Instead, though, we just bought an 18′ x 48″ above ground pool and I’ve barely seen my kids since we put it up. They are swimming fools right now! ~ Megan from Half-Pint House Handouts.

I am so excited for swimming lessons to begin, pee-wee soccer games and of course family bike rides and impromptu games of frisbee and pushing the little ones in my double stroller for a few 5Ks this Summer. I love this time of year! Even if it is just going to watch older kids play and get my kids excited about the possibilities ~ Andrea from Adventures In All Things Food & Family.

My son is on a little league team right now – but this ends in mid-June.  He is taking swimming lessons all summer long and attending sports camps!  I really want to keep him active over the summer and I think the team dynamic is good for him — he is 7 and an only child, so that’s really important to us ~ Kathy from Detroit Mommies.

My sons are year round soccer players. They have travel soccer until mid-June, then an annual tournament and in early July they start conditioning for fall (school). August is training camp for fall. My oldest is also playing deck hockey this summer. The younger twin considered playing baseball but decided he didn’t want to fill up his summer too much, especially because he is hoping to get a summer job. (He would have been allowed, but good for him for thinking it through a bit!) We are very lucky we have multiple parks/fields nearby and the kids and their friends do a lot of pick-up games of baseball/hockey/soccer/basketball etc. My garage looks ridiculous with all the nets, balls & cleats! My boys play because it is just their thing. We’ve been doing organized sports for a while, mainly because they have a great time, they get their exercise and they like the competition. Also, my husband, his brother and a bunch of friends put together a softball team for our local rec league ~ Jen from An Everyday Family.

I play in a summer softball league, which I love. It’s so nice to have an outlet for myself. My husband plays baseball for the same reason. The wee ones are both in year round sports (that sounds wrong, doesn’t it – at 6 and 8?). They do tae kwon do and gymnastics, respectively, so we don’t add anything more to that, other than swimming lessons in the summer. They love the sport they’ve chosen, so we do it a couple times a week and take time off when we need it. They’re happy, I’m happy ~ Michelle from Honest & Truly.

We get really active during the summer. We’re tennis and golf freaks so we do a lot of tennis and golf during the summer. We have 2 dogs now too, so we’ve amped it up to include hiking and jogging. Lots of fun stuff! ~ Cinny from Whirlwind of Surprises.

My boys do swimming classes and British soccer camp.  We also sign up at our Rec Center for the summer so we can go swimming anytime we want ~ Trish from Mom On Timeout.

What sports/activities are you involved in this summer?

When the kids were in school they all were involved in some sort of traveling or club sport. Gymnastics and hockey they played year round. My middle son wrestled in college and practiced all year. Now that they are older they all are in softball leagues, this still keeps us connected in a way we were connected when they were little. I still cheer loud for my 27, 24 and 21 year old at their games!
