Science fairs are coming…. it’s a time when kids of all ages (and grown-ups too) start to think about what they’re going to create for their next big science project. This Friday we’ll be hosting a @CollectiveBias Twitter Chat at 12:30 pm EST; be sure to join us by using the hashtags #Science and #cbias. We’ll be chatting about the latest ideas and advice for creating awesome science projects.

It seems that our creative Social Fabric members are always coming up with new and awesome ideas when it comes to any kind of craft or project. So, we asked their thoughts when it comes to science projects….

When asked if their kids participate in science fairs, 37% of those surveyed answered that their kids enter their own projects; 25% work on a team project. We asked what type of science projects their kids submit to science fairs. 66% answered that models (like volcanoes or the solar system) are the top project, while 50% submit experiments (similar to Mythbusters) or a collection (rocks, bugs, etc.). So, where do they typically purchase supplies for science projects? 85% of those answering say they shop at mass retailers (like Walmart, Kmart, or Target); craft stores (like Michaels, Hobby Lobby, etc.) were also a popular answer. Interestingly, 0% prefer pre-made science kits; 85% answered they usually gather or purchase a mix of supplies for each project. 57% of survey respondents answered they usually spend between $20-40 on supplies. Another interesting note: 44% said their kids love to experiment and do projects, even when there is no science fair.

Social Fabric members also shared their own experience with science projects; you’ll find some great ideas from their posts and conversation…..

Thien-Kim, from I’m Not the Nanny, shares ideas for Mad Science: Dry Ice Experiments for Kids.

Henrietta’s daughter, on A Hen’s Nest, had an unfinished volcano she was working on….adding in some creative touches, as well, in Wordless Wednesday- Unfinished Project.

Laura, from About a Mom, made an Olive Oil Lava Lamp with her kids….so groovy!

Brandie, from Home Cooking Memories, had her kids in the kitchen exploring Candy Stages & Caramelization, also using an Elmer’s Tri-Fold board to display their discoveries.

A volcano was in the works for Elizabeth’s 3rd grader on Elegantly Said, Wordless Wednesday- Volcano Project.

My 11 year old and 9 year old love anything science & nature related!  I haven’t done any big awesome projects or science fairs but a year ago at Christmas I made science kits for my kids and 3 others.  The kit included “recipes” for a bunch of different science experiments.  I did these when I first started blogging so they aren’t flashy or eye catching but the kids LOVED them!! {Science Kit and Bobbing Raisins}, {Quicksand}, and {Scared Pepper} ~ Tonia, from The Gunny Sack.

My kid isn’t old enough for science fair stuff, but I just want to say thank goodness for Pinterest! Everyone should definitely look there for inspiration! ~ Tiffany from Stuff Parents Need.

Our family loves science projects! We homeschool so science projects are a common activity ~ Brandie from Home Cooking Memories.

Whatever you decide to create, we hope this will get you off and running with ideas…. Happy creating!
